Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960 - 1988): Artist And Cultural Icon

Photobucket
As this Black History Month closes, I want to do a short segment on one of my favorite artists, the late Jean-Michel Basquiat. The Haitian American who revolutionized the world of art originally gained fame in the late 1970's as a grafiti artist, but moved on to become one of the forerunners of the neo-expressionist art movement.

Basquiat first started to gain recognition as an artist in 1980. By 1982, Basquiat was shown regularly and alongside some of the most famous artists in the world. He frequently collaborated with Andy Warhol, with whom he is pictured below.

Photobucket
(Basquiat and Warhol)

His personal life was just as vivacious as his artwork. The bisexual artist was linked romantically with Madonna and fellow artist David Bowes. Some even claim that he had a romantic relationship with his close yet strained friend Andy Warhol.

Photobucket
(Basquiat and Madonna)

By 1984 Basquiat developed an excessive heroin habit, which started from his early years living among the junkies and street artists in New York's underground. At the same time, he was starting to become a cultural icon of the 1980s. On February 10, 1985, he appeared on the cover of the The New York Times Magazine. As Basquiat's international success heightened, his works were shown in solo exhibitions across Europe and the USA.

Photobucket

At his 57 Great Jones Street loft/studio in 1988, Basquiat died accidentally of mixed-drug toxicity (he combined cocaine and heroin, creating a drug known as "speedballing")

He was only 27...

Enough of the hype! Let's get to the art! Check out some of Jean-Michel Basquiat's best works below...

SayWhat?!? DMX Faces An ADDITIONAL 8 YEARS In Prison For Assaulting A Guard???

Photobucket

Now we all know that DMX has had his fair share of troubles with the law... If you don't believe me, check out the host of mugshots above. Currently, DMX, real name Earl Simmons, is serving a 90-day jail sentence after pleading guilty to felony charges of theft, drug possession and a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty on Dec. 30.

To say that DMX "doesn't give a f***" is probably the biggest understatement of the year. He was already on a "bread and water" diet as punishment for an earlier jail voilation.

Word is that he might face 8 YEARS IN JAIL for ASSAULTING A POLICE OFFICER!!! Apparently, while tripping out because he was denied a dinner plate (because he's on a bread and water diet), he threw a tray at a prison guard!!! The guard is uninjured, but this is still a huge deal. He was rebooked, which means that he was basically re-arrested, while in jail, for committing a totally new crime.

Do ya'll remember when DMX was the hottest rapper in the game? Back in 1999/2000, he used run neck-and-neck with Jay-Z. In fact, he actually pushed more records than Jigga did...

How do you feel about Earl Simmons? Dude is 38, will he ever get over these problems?

Im Here To Win

Beyonce Talks Retirement, Jay-Z, And More With Ebony

Photobucket

Beyonce fans don't have to worry about her going nowhere anytime soon. The iconic superstar says she's not retiring anytime soon! "I will never retire. I love it way to much. I've worked so hard on my craft and I will never stop," Beyonce expressed to Ebony, in their April issue.

She says her and Jay-Z stay out of each other’s business dealings. “He was very successful before I met him and I was very successful before I met him. So we have so much respect for each other, and respect for each other artistically. We are very close friends, and I believe he is the ultimate artist and he has the same feelings for me.”

One thing she does to get on his nerve: “I’m a little messy. Oh, yeah. Whenever I’m out in public, I have to be put together. When I get home, I rebel against it and I don’t want to take care of anything. I drop it. I’m relaxed. I don’t have any shoes on. No makeup. My purse is in the kitchen. I think that is most difficult thing for him. He’s very, very organized. I’m extremely organized when I’m working, and I work so much that when I get home I don’t want to think about anything.”

When she makes decisions about what projects to do, her priority is not money but personal growth. “I turn down million dollar offers all the time because it’s something that does not feel true for what I’m trying to say. I have to be passionate about it. Love inspires and growth inspires me…If it is not going to be iconic, something I can love 10 years from now, I’ve learned I should not waste my time with it.”

"I wanted to talk to them before I made a comment....I spoke to Rihanna. She says she's fine. She didn't go into detail about what happened. I understand it's a painful situation; I didn't push." Ne-Yo explained.

"I saw the picture," he said in a somber tone. "That just really — that hurt me to my heart, man. Again, I still don't know what happened, 'cause I haven't had the opportunity to talk to Chris yet. But to take it to that level really hurt my heart. All I can say is, I'm praying for both of them. They're both in my prayers. I haven't had a chance to talk to Chris yet. I just wanna sit down and talk to that dude and just explain if he doesn't understand: 'That's not something that's excusable, bruh. You have to get a little smarter about whatever it is going on in your relationship. You have to get a little smarter about how you handle certain situations.' "

Still, Ne-Yo refused to be take Brown to the pits of hell for his actions. "I'm not going to crucify him," Ne-Yo said. "I'm not going to do that. That's still my homeboy at the end of the day. For it to go to that level was wrong. I won't say who was responsible. I won't pick no sides. I'm just saying it was wrong [that] it had to happen like that, and I'm praying for the both of them."

Travel Light; Think “Outside The Bag”

Photobucket

I dread going airports; I hate delays and I have no patience. But I always find myself at them mainly because, like I said, my patience is low, so I won't allow myself to do more than 4 hrs on anybody's road. Anything over that, buy me a plane ticket and I'll see you in a few hours. I use to travel heavy, but now airlines have started charging for each luggage, and I've learn to itemize my belongings & minimize my bags. It's all about one or two good carry-on's, at no charge! I want to give simple tips on what to include & what to leave out, when traveling to make your trip simpler.

  • Check And Veirfy - First things first, do your homework! Don't pack before you check the Weather Channel. Verify the weather and temperature at your destination city to avoid bringing the wrong set of clothing. This will help you strategize & determine which travel clothes are sufficient enough to lay out & pack! I would hate to see someone in a bubble vest in 80 degree weather!?! When packing, triple folding is key!!!! I find it to be the best way to pack and still have room for more. Though you might have to sacrifice a few items, you'll find it worth your wild when bypassing others who are waiting on their luggage at the airport.

  • Grab Your Largest Bag Possible -  Bring a bag that you'll get the most out of, like an oversized duffle. Don't pack your bag to full capacity, leave room to spare. You always want to leave room for any extra items you might pick up on along the way. For me, I take "Kennedy" (my man bag) on long trips and it stores everything I can imagine. I could get 5 full outfits in that one bag. So while others may have a word, to two, to throw out about me carrying a man bag, I'm sitting back listening to my iPod, watching them struggle with all their luggage lol. Which brings me to my next point.

  • MP3's - My iPod is a must-have item in the airport. It's light and convenient...and with less luggage to look after, you can close your eyes at the airport and let your music take you to another place, U.K. perhaps? Make a playlist that will have you content and at ease. My travel playlist [ titled- "Out Of Space"] takes me to another world...so it's like I'm always traveling to several different places at once.

  • Two Is Better Than One - Try to bring at lease two pairs of shoes, wearing the most convenient pair on the plane and packing the other pair. In most cases, two shoes will do! If you are that person who wears a different shoe/sneaker with every outfit, play it smart and tightly store your socks and boxers/briefs INSIDE your shoes, increasing space in your bag for the extra kicks.

  • Zip it Up! - Take all must-have hygiene products with you & pack them all in one bag. If you like to travel in style, Christian Dior has this ‘logo clear plastic shoulder bag’ which is used for carry on baggage's and it's great. I believe most airport security rules state liquids must be 3 oz. or less. The idea is to save time by having liquids visible in a separate bag, so your not held up at security gates. Make sure to remove excess air from the plastic bag - It's all about extra space remember!?!

With these simple tips & only carry-on luggage, you'll have others gagging, while their still waiting for their checked luggage.

Keep in mind: LESS IS MORE!

You'll have less to lose, less to be stolen, less to pack and unpack...and most importantly, less to worry about.

Have a safe trip and thanks for flying with KidduNot

Who Shot Cha?!: Photographer David LaChapelle

Photobucket

As an up-and-coming photographer, the work of David LaChapelle is something I've always admired. His detail, whether in you face or minuet, has always stuck out to me in his pictures. I remember seeing this picture of Pink holding a fire extinguisher in some random magazine years back, I sat thinking to myself "Who in the heck shot this?". To my surprise, it was the work of Mr. LaChapelle. Already being familiar with his work, I should have known - but I didn't. Remember the infamous picture of Tupac sitting in a tub, with soap sods around this head and gentile area? Yep, more great work from David LaChapelle!

Photobucket

He's also famous for shooting Lil' Kim in the infamous Louis Vuttion Logo prints, tat'ed over her naked body. All classic work to say the least. His work could be defined as 'Sexy-lux art in my book. His art is filled with lots of drama and enhanced colours. One glance at this photos and you can clearly his wild imagination in full force with each piece. Love it or hate it, you can't help but appreciate him as a fantastic photographer!

From Hattie to J.Hud: Black Actors And Actresses Who Have Won Oscars

This year's Academy Awards ceremony was probably the best that I've seen in a long time. You could actually watch it from beginning to end, because it truly kept you entertained. However, as we celebrate the awards given to the great works last night, let's not forget the strides that our Black actors and actresses made to pave the way for us in one of the most competitive fields that exist.

In 1940, Hattie McDaniel became the first African American to win an Oscar for her role of a maid in Gone With The Wind. Although a lot of Blacks, especially the NAACP, criticized McDaniel because of the nature of her role, her contributions to the field of acting cannot be contested. In fact, she used the constraints of reality to create a new reality for Black actors and actresses.
Photobucket

Twenty-four years later, in 1964, Sidney Poitier became the first Black man to ever win an Oscar and the first Black man to ever earn the Best Actor in a Lead Role award for his work in Lillies of the Field.
Photobucket

In 1983, Louis Gossett, Jr. became the first Black man to win the best supporting actor Oscar for his part in Officer And A Gentleman.
Photobucket

Whoopi Goldberg earned an Oscar for best Supporting Actress in 1991 for Ghost.
Photobucket

Cuba Gooding, Jr. won Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Jerry Maguire in 1997
Photobucket

In 2002, thirty-eight years after Hattie McDaniel became the first African American actress to receive an Oscar, Halle Barry became the first African American woman to accept the award for Best Actress in a Lead Role for her work in Monster's Ball.
Photobucket

On the same night, Denzel Washington became the second Black man to win the award for Best Actor in a Lead Role for his work in Training Day. He is also the only Black actor to hold two Oscars; he won another in 1990 for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Glory.
Photobucket

Jamie Foxx won Best Actor in a Leading Role in the biopic Ray in 2005
Photobucket

Morgan Freeman won Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Million Dollar Baby in 2005
Photobucket

Forest Whitaker won Best Actor in a Leading Role for The Last King of Scotland in 2007
Photobucket

And most recently, Jennifer Hudson won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Dreamgirls in 2007
Photobucket

Other Honorable Mentions include Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Willie D. Burton, Russell Williams II, Prince, Herbie Hancock, Irene Cara, James Baskett, and Isaac Hayes, all of whom have won Oscars for their particular roles in movies outside of acting.
